Live Jazz MUSIC, Houston
In Houston, it’s possible most nights of the week to take in some very good jazz music. The standard is high as you will see that the Houston Jazz music scene is filled with musicians who “if circumstances took them to New York, would do very well there,” as Bob Morgan told Houstonia in a recent interview.
Singer and bandleader Tianna Hall explains that there are over 20 Jazz musicians on the Houston circuit either playing full-time, or mixing playing with teaching. “In New York there’s lots of work,” she says, “but I know lots of artists on Blue Note [Records] who are playing for $100 a night, if that. But you can make a living [playing in Houston Jazz Clubs].” Hall performs six nights a week and is one of Houston’s most ‘in demand’ jazz musicians.
Live Music Restaurants, Houston
Mascalzone features live Jazz every Friday evening from Tianna Hall and she is often accompanied by some of the top artists that are regulars in the Houston Jazz Clubs including saxophonists Warren Sneed and David Caceres; trumpeter Dennis Dotson; guitarists Paul Chester, Chris Cortez, and Mike Wheeler; pianists Bob Henschen, Joe LoCascio, Paul English, Art Fristoe, and Pamela York (who also sings); bassists David Craig, Erin Wright, and Thomas Helton; drummers Gene Black, Tim Solook and Sebastian Whittaker; vocalists Horace Grigsby; and Hall.
And you never know who is going to show up on any given evening to sit in with band!
It is fairly commonplace for Houston musicians to ply their trade playing background music in bars and lounges of expensive restaurants where their music has become an element of the package the restaurant offers.
One venue that Tianna Hall can be seen regularly is at Mascalzone Ristorante Italiano Houston.
Jazz in Houston at Mascalzone
Mascalzone has become a center for some of the best live jazz music in Houston. With a great vibe, excellent food and drink and an atmosphere where the crowd can really show their appreciation for the great music on display Mascalzone is an attraction for musicians, jazz lovers and foodies alike.
During summer and fall, the concerts are held on our outdoor patio, which is naturally cooled by a gorgeous pond and waterfall. During winter and spring, the artists perform in the indoor Mascalzone lounge.
What’s interesting about the Jazz nights at Mascalzone and the other live music restaurants in Houston is the homegrown and rootsy vibe.
“The jazz centers in the country, and maybe the world, are major tourist centers. If you go to a jazz club in New York, more than half [of the patrons] are foreign. The houston jazz events just don’t get a lot of tourists” – Bob Morgan.
Because of the popularity of the artists and the shows, seating is extremely limited and we highly recommend reserving your spot to ensure availability.
