Origins of Father’s Day
There are various versions as to the origins of Father’s Day.
According to one old tale, Father’s Day came about because of a woman named Grace Golden Clayton from Fairmount, West Virginia.
In 1908 a local a mining disaster killed 362 local men. Grace, who was an orphan herself, lobbied her local Methodist ministers for a church service to honour the fathers that lost their lives.
Their deaths left over 1,000 children without fathers and Grace wanted to pay tribute – along with her own.
